SUMMIT 09 - An initial Retro

Hi all,

The following is an initial retrospect of SUMMIT 09. Kindly do not consider this as an official draft, as the said is being prepared. The final report shall be submitted on or before 15th August, 2009.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING CHENGANNUR

INITIAL EVALUATION OF SUMMIT ‘09

Dated: 20-Aug-2009

SUMMIT 09, the fifth event of SUMMIT series of College of Engineering Chengannur was conducted on 17th and 18th of August, 2009 at the college premises. This time, attempts were made to make it a national level technical festival, which had been a south India level fest so far.

SUMMIT 09 was colourful with the presence of nationally distinuged personalities from all over India, and with the young talented minds as delegates from all parts of the country. The resource persons include Mr. Anand Pavithran from IPSL Solutions Ltd., Amal Mathai from RedHat, Dr. Achuthsankar S Nair, Mr. Sreelal S Pillai, Mr. Sasikumar V, Mr. Prakash Advani from Cannonical Ltd., etc.

There were around 420 registrations for the entire event, excluding CEC LAN Party and Fun Zone. There was partiicpation from 26 colleges and 2 higher secondary schools. 300 students attended the Project Exhibition conducted in the aegis of SUMMIT 09 for community interaction.

Paculiarity of this SUMMIT is that we could set up the video conferencing equipment of the college and could conduct a session on “Open Source” with Mr. Prakash Advani, Manager (Marketing), Cannonical Ltd. The event was successful in all means.

Another achievement was that we could conduct 3 seminars, 1 workshop and 1 video conferencing within a span of 2 days, with due participation of delegates. The feedbacks we got indicate that all those sessions were useful to them in all sense.

Unlike other tech fests, SUMMIT 09 was presented with a social outlook. Events like Vision 2020 – the Master minds caught the attention of delegates, which provided them with an arena to present their own views on how to solve the social problems with an engineering perspective. And more than 25 simple circuits were done by students of CEC, and were exhibited for the students of nearby schools.

Apart from the technical events, events like Quiz, Best Manager, Fun Zone, etc. attracted the crowd heavily. The delegates didn’t hesitate to participate in fun events, which were conducted at the centre court, during leasure time and intervals. Besides, the cultural programme conducted by “SRUTHY Music Club”, CEC at the end of the event added to the beauty of the event.

Participation from all batches viz. Semesters VII, V and III was ensured in the execution phase and volunteership during the event. Also, a fairly complete utilization of the college resources was done in all means.

The main crisis we had to handle was unexpected power failures, and we could solve such problems easily and effectively without affecting the continuity of the event.

The success behind SUMMIT 09 is undoubtedly the cooperation of the staffs and students of the college in whatever it maybe. Especially, we are thankful to Prof. (Dr.) V P Devassia, our beloved Principal, Mr. C R Ajith Sen, Staff Coordinator of SUMMIT 09 and Mr. Rubon L and Mr. Liju Philip, the Financial and Technical Staff Coordinators respectively. We thank all the staff members of the college, our seniors, juniors and our batchmates for their kind support for this event which made this a grand success...

General Convener (Students),

Hi all,

Yoga classes for the final years have started by Mr. C R Ajith Sen, Lr. in Physical Education, Sl. Gr. The students have opined that the classes are going well and they have found it to be very useful in the initial phase itself, to get relaxed off the hurry-berry of professional education. "It gives mental and physical relax for me with in these 4 days of practice", said Jishad A V (2006-10). Ajith Sen sir is an internationally certified trainer.

On 30-Jul-2009, personnel of IBM, Cannonical Ltd. and United Nations visited the college campus and gave a joint-lecture on IT-trends, Open Source, etc. This is a joint venture by the aforesaid organizations and they've launched it in CEC, for the first time in Kerala. The lectures were from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and have been found to be very useful to the attendees. May be, CEC could make a big leap out of these contacts... Contacts from Cannonical Ltd. was obtained through Mr. Manoj Iyer (CEC 1994-98), who's a kernel engineer there. Thanks to him.

CAMPION 09 works are going well. Minutes of meetings shall be updates soon.

False News in The New Indian Express about CEC, Interview for Faculty

Hi all,

There was a false news in The New Indian Express on 15th June, 2009 in the Thiruvananthapuram edition about CEC. It stated that CEC lost its AICTE recognition along with other four self-financing colleges in Kerala, due to lack of infrastructure. But this was a false news that could have come from the false interpretation of the document published by AICTE. Heard that our college has applied for more seats and it might be because of the procedures to avail this that such a misunderstanding might have occured to the daily out of the AICTE document published in their website. However, CEC has a clear recognition of AICTE till 2011. Many students and parents would have fallen to confusion reading this false news, and to reveal the truth to the public, our principal Prof. (Dr.) V P Devassia sent a note of objection to the daily and The New Indian Express published a news on the very next day (16-Jun-2009) including the statement from the principal. The copy of the statement published in the daily is here:

News in The New Indian Express on 16th June, 2009 as the denial of the news published the previous day on the same daily that AICTE recognition of CEC was cancelled due to lack of infrastructure... It was a false news and the daily published a note from the Principal, like this....

Interview, as it's previously scheduled, to the post of faculty in Computer Engg. was conducted (actually, the test) on 17-Jun-2009. There were 75+ candidates for the post of 8 or 9! Yea, recession works out... :P

Applicants for CS faculty on 17th June, 2009 at CEC... around 75 for the post of 8! Yea, recession really works....

TEQIP, SSB, New Plants, Floodlight, Registration and Fees Remittance, New Security, M.Tech, SHREDS, New Route Map and many more.....

Hi all,

The whole CEC is now enjoying a beautiful vacation expect, of course, the first years. Their examinations are now going on, and unfortunately, they will be having no vacation time this time. Because they were expected to get only 5 days of vacation, but one of their exams got postponed. So no vacation for them this time.

Infosys gave offer letters to the 2009 passouts and they have already joined. Some students from the pre-final year attended SSB interview to the Indian Army in this vacation at Allahabad, Bhopal and Bangalore. Some could get into the Stage II, but unfortunately none could get into the medicals so far. Still, some students are undergoiung the tests. All say that this was one of the most beautiful and greatest experiences of their lives. Between, Mr. Nihil Zachariah's merit list to the Indian Army is published and he's found FIT to undergo training. He's to Jul 2009 batch from UES 18(PFY) category. One more Lt. Captain from CEC (Mr. John Paul from 2008 batch had joined IMA last year and is now undergoing last periods of his training there).

New floodlight (4 Nos.) were placed at the college building facing the centre court (badminton court).

A new security staff has also joined the college, while Mr. Kurup has left. In this academic year, all the three staff are new faces.

NIT, Calicut's alumni conducts a detailed academic and non-academic survey of all engineering colleges in Kerala to rate them. May be, our college also will be participating in this. Heard that no decision has yet not been taken. But Mr. Laiju K Raju, arts secretary, has been collecting the details of artistic extracurricular activities of students for the same under the direction from Mr. Jayadeep Kumar, Staff-in-charge of senate.

Heard that duration of our TEQIP funding is now over and Mr. Liju Philip commented that our college was very efficient in utilizing the fund in an effective manner, without wating the money in any sort. We must admit that TEQIP has been the backbone of of CEC for last few years and has contributed the best to the growth of our college. Between, the project under TEQIP and PRODDEC has completed its mission of making an automated traffic signal system to be placed at the Sky Junction near CEC. It shall be placed there, I believe, very soon. Mr. Jospeh Peter, Mr. Harikumar (Kannan), Mr. Harisankar and Mr. Praveen Kumar (all form 2009 batch) and Mr. Sarath S of 2010 batch and lot more people were working hard for this for last few months. Their dedication and hardwork has hit the target... Congrats CECians...

CECians under work of Traffic Signal System...

Mr. Liju Philip, Lecturer in Electronics said that there's a plan with the college authorities to enable the parents of the students of the institution visit the amenities of the college for one day. This shall help them to better understand the facilities and environment in which their wards study. This seems to be a good initiative and shall be a good exposure for our college.

S8 results of 2009 batch is published and seems to be OK. Some arrears in MWC. However, heard that the result is satisfactory. S5 results are expected within 2 weeks. Also, the special supple for S7 and S5 are expected to be conducted in the last of July. All semesters' class will be starting on 1st July itself and registration to the next semester along with the fees to the next year must be paid on or before 1st July, 2009 after clearing all the dues.

Registration in the SHREDS is now open for 2010 batch. Due to recession, it must be at least 6 months late this time for opening registration. For registering yourselves, go to http://www.shredskerala.org and find the NEW REGISTRATION link on the left nav bar on the home page. Heard that there's a scope of opening a course of M.Tech in VLSI this year. Dunno how much procedures are completed so far. Heard that syllabus is the same as that of Model Engg. College. However, there shall be some changes in the syllabus to make it more contemporary.

A new load of 500 plants has reached the college through "Ente Maram Padhathi". Before, Mr. Sanoop Thomas had spoken to the Principal, expressing interest in planting trees in the campus and he's responded positively. Those plants shall be planted in the first week of July, I believe.

As the existing route map of our college is not upto the mark, the Principal asked Mr. Laiju K Raju of 2010 batch to redesign the same. He started work from scratch and now it's reached a fantabulous creation of art and logic. Congrats Laiju.... These are the old and new route maps:

College Building, Navy Unit, Language Lab by PTA, Football Camp, No Unofficial Tours Next Year Onwards and New Security Staffs

Hi all,

Recently we had a talk with Ajith Sen Sir and he told us that the amount required for the remainig works of the building have already been remitted to the PWD. Further proceedings are to be taken by them. This amount includes cost of works of the building as well as that for making a wall around the plot for college hostel. Let's hope this will happen at the earliest.

Ajith Sen sir told us that we have been trying to begin a Navy Unit. But it's very hard to achieve this, and formalities are on the go.

The PTA has taken a decision to build up a new language lab, consisting of 35 consoles and a central console. This shall cost much, but he said that this could be inevitable in this era of recession that students with top soft skills only will be recruited by the MNC's. The currently existing one might not meet the requirements and taht's why we are going for a new one. Happy to hear that our PTA (FYI, in 2008-09, PTA was formed for the first time in the history of CEC) is very active in the college activities.

Football camp by Mr. Jyothi, a Chengannur native and the football coach of Pathanamthitta Football Club, who's been working as the coach of many schools, is going well. Many in the national football team are the disciples of Mr. Jyothi. The attendees are very much happy about the way it progresses.

Because of the recent unhappy incident in the college, Ajith Sen sir said that there will be strict rules for preventing students from undergoing unofficial tours from next year onwards.

There joined two new security staffs at CEC, Mr. Sasi Kumar, an Ex-Military (Communication Dept.) and Mr. Mohanan Pillai, an Ex-Military.

Best regards,

Foot Ball Camp, Placement Drive, SSB Interview, SUMMIT 09, New Codeless Mic & CEC Website

Hi all,

CEC is now at sleep... Exams all over, no one in the campus... Exams for the first years will start on 2nd June. A football camp has been scheduled to be conducted from 15th May, which shall extend upto 15 days. Camp shall be under the coaching of an eminent personality. Selected students shall attend the camp in the college premises itself.

A placement drive for 2009 batch by HCL was conducted on 13th May. Around 100 students participated in the drive, and it extended upto 6 in the eve. Results shall be declared later.

A vacation course in the aegis of IEEE will be conducted at ITI, Bangalore from 15th May to 30th May. Many students from our college are attending the same.

Call letters for SSB interview to the Indian Army have been reaching the students these days. Places of test are found to be Bangalore, Alahabad, Bhopal etc. It shall be during 28th May-9th June.

Works of SUMMIT 09 are back to the track. Arjun R Pillai and Sanoop Thomas met the principal today, for discussions on new dates of SUMMIT 09. Response from him was rather cold, as he's not satisfied with the current ampere of works, and it's too late to propose a date for SUMMIT 09, he says. Also, he has advised us to discuss the proceedings with the staff. The request for declaring SUMMIT 09 to be conducted from 19-21 August, 2009 has been submitted to the Principal, but he says there must be an academic council to gather for taking a deicsion in this regard. The next possible date for the meeting of AC is 3rd June, and by the way, we will have to wait till 3rd for officially fixing the date. The bitter part of the story is that we're not able to send mails or proceed with any work with the dates not being confirmed. Also, a request for change in the Execom of SUMMIT 09 was also submitted, whose official notification shall come out shortly. The new execom is as follows:

  1. General Convener                               -           Mr. Sanoop Thomas (2006-10 CS)
  2. Joint Conveners                                  -           Mr. Sojo James (2006-10 EC)
  3.                                                                     -           Ms. Maya Paul (2006-10 EC)
  4. Treasurer                                                -          Mr. Dawns John (2006-10 EC)
  5. Sub-treasurers                                      -          Mr. Sandeep Chacko Z (2006-10 CS)
  6.                                                                      -         Ms. Surya T Skaria (2006-10 EC)
  7. Public Relations Officer                    -          Mr. Vishnusree G (2006-10 EC)
  8. Activity Coordinator                         -          Mr. Amal D Mukund (2006-10 CS)
  9. Technical Coordinator                      -          Mr. Anoop Thomas M (2006-10 CS)
  10. Steering Coordinator                        -           Mr. Arjun R Pillai (2006-10 EC)
  11. Venue Manager                                   -           Mr. Akhil Dev A V (2006-10 EC)
  12. IEEE Representative                         -           Mr. Rahul Raj (2006-10 CS)
  13. PRODDEC Representative               -           Mr. Jofin Joseph (2006-10 CS)

Also, by special recommendation by Mr. Liju Philip, Technical Coordinator (Staff), Ms. Maya Paul will be assisting Rahul Raj in IEEE-related activities, while Mr. Sojo James will be assisting Jofin Jospeh in PRODDEC related activities.

A pair of new codeless mic has been bought from AHUJA, and heard that it will be used for Sports related purpose. It's range is around 300 feets, but it's found to work well beyond 100 m. It's kept in the college auditorium. Last day, Mr. Joseph Peter (2009 EC) and Sarath S (2010 EC) had some work with the speaker system in the auditorium, and now its performance has changed by a great scale. Hats off to them.

CEC's website was down for last few days. Anoop K Jayan (2007 CS), who's maintaining the server said that it's some problem with the domain name, which was found to be unlocatable; however, the issue has been resolved by today evening.

Best Regards,

Look the clouds are parting to show the way
And i thank my God for the time we've spent...
(This moment is for ever more)
Sreehari: Dhadke hai... dil mera
Pal jaise... tham gaya

Bagiyon ki kaliyon main
Kis liye halchalein...
Jaaye ab kahan nikalke,
Anjaane rahon main chalke
Sang mere tu bhi nahi...
Reuben: As we're standing one in heart and mind
Lintu: Joys and sorrows of youth here enshrined
Reuben: That you'll find our heart beats and our cries
Both: Ringing through this place long after we're gone
Gettin' set to walk out of the door
Holding back my tears i gaze unsure
I will ask you just one favour more
Will you think of me, remember me forever?
Reuben: Forever...
Hmmm...
Sreehari: Puthiyathaam vazhiyiloode nammal
Navapratheekshakalumaay...
Lokathin deepamaayi theeraam
snehasparshanavumaay...
Neengidenam naam, rithu chakrathin koode,
Asaadhyamaam ithine kadanniduvaan
Bhaaviyil en kaal chuvadukalkkoppam
Venam nin praarthana...
Do palon ki zindagi hai
Jhagdon mein ye lamhen na tu gava
Bhool ja...
Kehdoon mein is pal mile jo
Doston ko ek baar alvida...
Alvida...

CEC NSS Report, 2008-09

Hi all,

Here's the NSS report of the year 2008-09. I am posting this on behalf of Mr. Jaseen Jamal  (trap60cents@gmail.com)(2010 EC), the Secretary, NSS Unit. Comments and suggestions please.

You may read the whole article in this post, or else you can download here

REPORT OF NSS UNIT, 2008-09

As in every year, activities of College of Engineering Chengannur NSS Unit were done in its full spirit and found to provide the students of the unit with a good level of social responsibilities. The main objectives of the unit in this period were as to:

  1. understand the community in which they work
  2. understand themselves in relation to their community
  3. identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  4. develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  5. utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  6. develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  7. gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  8. acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  9. develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  10. practise national integration and social harmony

College of Engineering Chengannur NSS Unit was a success in fulfilling the motto of the National Service Scheme as "Not Me But You” that reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helped the students develop appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the activities of our NSS unit in the year 2008-09 were very well doctrined in this motto, which underlines the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society. The unit was successful in meeting all these visions.

The formation of the Executive Committee was made on 30th January, 2009. Mr. C R Ajith Sen, Lecturer in Physical Education, stood for the coordinator of the NSS unit. Mr. Jaseen Jamal of 2006 Admissions was selected to the post of Secretary, and Ms. Soumya Narayanan of 2006 Admissions to the post of Asst. Secretary. Also, Mr. Shyam R and Stephy Tony of 2006 Admissions and Ms. Deepthy John of 2007 Admissions were elected to the Executive Committee.

As it was done in earlier years, students of our unit were scheduled for food serving at the Govt. hospital, Chengannur. It’s a matter of glad that all the students take up this charge with utmost sincerity and commitment. This shall be another golden feather to the crown of the unit.

Martyr’s Day was conducted on 30th January, 2009, in association with the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. As it’s directed by the NSS central unit, a pledge on the vision “Youth For Peace” was taken by all the students on this day. This helped the students evolve their awareness of the importance of youth in reinforcing peace in today’s war-like world. Also, this day has got another importance that January 30 has been declared to be “World Martyr’s Day” by UN.

As in early years, the food collection campaign to the nearby government hospital was done. This time, it could break the level of last year’s response, and the amount of food items collected notched up ever-time high. Collected food items were handed over to the authorities in a simple function conducted at the College Centre Court on 10th February, 2009.

There was a suggestion for a one day camp at the college was made and it was done on 15th February, 2009. It included cleaning the college campus, recreational activities, etc. It was more of a duty to the students, like, every one enjoyed the spirit of being together for a service. It reiterated the official motto of NSS and could enhance the leadership qualities of the students. All worked in groups, each having specified duties. The camp could redesign the physical appearance of the campus premises. Besides, lunch with all the volunteers being together was another exciting experience for them. The camp ended with a simple formal function and the volunteers shared their experience. Also, the volunteers for forthcoming five day camp were selected.

A blood donation campaign was conducted on 6th March, 2009, in the aegis of our NSS unit. 40 students donated blood at Medical College, Alappuzha and 20 at Century hospital, Chengannur. Besides, a database is being kept at the college, which has been looked into in the case of emergencies. Students of our unit have donated blood in many cases of emergencies and have proven their commitment to the society.

A five day camp conducted from 7th February to 11th February, 2009 at the HRD colony at Parachantha in Aala Panchayath, Alappuzha District. This camp was of an invaluable set of experiences to all the volunteers. They could feel the deepest pulses of the society. Details of the camp schedule are given below:

07-Feb-2009: The team from the college, consisting of around 70 students reached the camp at 9:00 AM. The inaugural function started at 10 AM. Following this, detailed directions were given to the volunteers by the camp director Mr. C R Ajith Sen, regarding the intention and targets of the camp. Then, all the students were split into 6 groups, out of which 1 group was assigned refreshment and food duties. Remaining 5 groups were given certain survey formats, which had to be filled by direct personal communication with each family in the colony. The entire colony was geographically divided into five portions, and each group covered one portion each. The experience from this survey is indeed remarkable. The volunteers met each family and spoke to the members of the family in person to get to know their whereabouts. The survey was intended to study the social grade of the colony families. But the output of the survey was something beyond its preset target. Following this, in the afternoon session, was a class on “Home Agriculture” by Aala Agriculture Officer. The class was attended by around 63 members of the colony. At the end of the session, packets of seeds suitable for home agriculture were also distributed among the attendees. First day’s programs were concluded by 4 PM.

08-Feb-2009: Due to some feasibility problems, the camp venue was shifted to the community hall of Panchayath. It was accessible to all part of the colony and the participation was found to increase day by day. The second day started with the computer awareness class for the youngsters of the colony. Whole attendees, around 65, were grouped into three, depending on their age. Different sessions were given by the volunteers on basics of computer, Softwares, Hardwares, Office Utilities, and Operating Systems etc. There was special arrangement for the attendees to practise themselves the learnt things too, following which there took place a small recreational program by the attendees. In the after noon, a special session on “AIDS” exclusive for students and elders was taken by Mr. Thomas Wilson, a social worker from the AIDS Control Society.

09-Feb-2009: The third day started with a session on Milk Products, which was attended by most of the house wives of the colony. The class was taken by Chengannur Diary Extension Officer. It was a very informative one that many attendees remarked they didn’t even know milk could be this much productive. They could also make ‘Milk Peda’ live at the session. In the afternoon, there was a class on “How to Face Exams”, which approached the little minds with a psychological analysis. It also helped the parents in how to prepare their wards for exams without fear or tension. Following this, there was a session on “Our India”, taken by Mr. Arunanand T A, an NSS volunteer of the unit. The session covered the historical, cultural, social, ancestral and hereditarial status of our nation. Some videos on national integrity were also displayed at the end of the session. The session was supposed to give an overview of our nation to the young minds of the camp premises.

10-Feb-2009: This was one of the most important days of our camp. A medical camp was conducted with the help of doctors and nurses from Century hospital, Chengannur. Most of the colony residents cooperated with this venture and attended the camp. The crew was very helpful in all senses and all the attendees made use of the camp to the fullest. Meanwhile, a trip to a nearby cashew nut factory was made by a group of volunteers. This was intended for enabling the volunteers study how the entire system works and collect the related information. Reports on this study visit were written and submitted to the camp director. After the successful completion of the medical camp, there was an awareness session on “Drugs and Its Effects”, which was specially meant for the youngsters of the community. It well explained the statistics and the effects of drug usage, which shall ruin the entire nation very soon unless its wings are clipped. Most of the youngsters from the colony attended the session and a documentary on the same thereafter. Then our unit presented before the colony residents a recreational program – a music show by SRUTHI Music Club of our college. This could lessen the mental tensions of the attendees and from their response, it’s very well understood that the venture was a great success.

11-Feb-2009: The last day of the camp started with cleaning of colony premises. The entire volunteers were grouped into five and each was assigned each portion of the colony. For the volunteers, this was more of a service to community, and they enjoyed it to the fullest. Dirty areas of the colony were cleaned; plastics and other non-degradable were collected and dumped in the proper manner. Besides, a passage which was regularly used by the colony residents but too hard to travel through was made into a passenger-friendly one. The warmth of love and cooperation got from the colony residents out of this is much remarkable. In the afternoon, there was a session taken by a medical practitioner on “Food Nutrition”. This very much helped the parents in knowing the proportion of nutrition each baby must get in each span of age. The session covered all aspects of nutrition food, and explained why all those are needed for us in prescribed proportion.

The five day camp ended with a simple closing ceremony. It’s remarkable that all the students found the camp to be very useful in all aspects it needs to be. Some of them shared their experience and the entire camp adjourned with NSS slogan and clap.

Thus, the academic year 2008-09 was a blissful one for the College of Engineering Chengannur NSS unit in all aspects. It could mould a successful big group of volunteers with deep routed sense of social responsibilities and commitment.
